Mount Erebus is an active volcano that rises 3794 metres above sea level and dominates McMurdo Sound. On 28 November 1979 this mountain was the scene of one of New Zealand's worst aviation disasters, when an Air New Zealand DC-10 (Flight TE-901) on a scenic flight crashed into its northern slopes and all 237 passengers and 20 crew on the flight were killed.
